CASE HISTORY FLASHBACK – LARGE DIAMETER STRUCTURES & TANKS – WHEN VERY BIG IS BEST! 14.5.2025

Back in 1998 RPC designed, manufactured and supplied the GRP casings for the Airfines Project for the BHP Whyalla Plant – BHP’s comprehensive program which focused on improving air quality involving dust management and air quality control measures. GRP has an asset life of more than 100-years and is the perfect material for engineering large diameter bespoke assets that need to work 24/7 in highly demanding and/or corrosive environments.

For our customer, Voist Alpine Industries (VAI), RPC engineered and manufactured two wet gas scrubbers which were 8.2m in diameter and 26m high and an exhaust stack that measured a whopping 3.8m in diameter and 100m high. These are the largest GRP structures ever manufactured in Australia. They were designed and engineered in Seven Hills, NSW, and manufactured on our bespoke large diameter mobile GRP winder.  The winder was relocated to Whyalla and installed near the site to manufacture these structures.

That winder is still in service at our Corio facility in Victoria. Today the winder is involved in manufacturing large diameter Infrastructure project requirements such as large diameter maintenance holes and water and wastewater piping and will soon be further upgraded to the latest technology.

No other company in Australia can engineer and manufacture large diameter GRP structures like RPC.  With a successful 50-year track record we are the go-to company for the Mining, Water, Wastewater and Energy sectors.
