Final May Road Shaft Liners for Central Interceptor project on the move – 29.11.2023

The extraordinary Central Interceptor project in Auckland, New Zealand, for GAJV and Watercare Services NZ, continues at pace. Recently the last four GRP shaft segments, 7B, 7C, 7D, 7E for May Road, were dispatched from RPC’s Corio facility via Melbourne Port. The GRP segments, engineered, manufactured, delivered and installed by RPC, are a massive 7.5m diameter, 3.1m high and weigh in at 12 tonnes each. Each segment was transported by road in the early hours of the morning taking up three lanes of traffic with an escort crew of 12 personnel.

These segments, the last units out of 23 segments, together with segment 7A from RPC in Batam, Indonesia, will complete the May Road shaft installation. To date, 18 segments have been installed and concrete encased.

The four Corio manufactured segments will be assembled above ground on site along with segment 7A to create a shaft module 15.5m high. This completed module will be installed in a single lift down the excavated shaft which is 9.6m diameter and 70m deep. The annulus between the rock excavation and GRP modules is then backfilled with concrete.

The current shipment will complete the final delivery and allow the final installation at May Road to be completed before Christmas.
